How to actually use a past paper

  1. Do it under exam conditions first. Time yourself, close your notes, and only then open the memo. Reading a paper with the memo beside you feels productive and teaches you almost nothing.
  2. Mark yourself honestly against the memo. Memos show the mark allocation per step, which tells you where the marks actually live — often in the working, not the final answer.
  3. Track the topics you lose marks on, not the totals. Three papers is usually enough to see the same two or three weak topics repeat.
  4. Work backwards from the most recent year. Older papers still help, but the newest ones match the current examination guidelines most closely.
