WHAT DOES THE KHOBAB WIND FARM DO?
Khobab Wind Farm is one of South Africa’s large-scale renewable energy facilities, situated near Loeriesfontein in the Northern Cape. The wind farm became fully operational in 2017 and has an installed generation capacity of 140 MW, produced by 61 wind turbines. As part of the country’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP), the facility supplies clean electricity to the national grid and helps diversify South Africa’s energy mix.
The project generates enough renewable electricity to supply the annual needs of approximately 170,000 South African households, while reducing greenhouse gas emissions by displacing electricity generated from fossil fuels. In addition to supporting the country’s transition towards cleaner energy, Khobab Wind Farm contributes to improved energy security through long-term, sustainable power generation.
Beyond producing renewable electricity, Khobab Wind Farm is committed to creating lasting social and economic benefits for neighbouring communities. Through dedicated socio-economic development and enterprise development initiatives, the project invests in education, skills development, healthcare, local infrastructure and community-based programmes designed to improve opportunities and livelihoods within the surrounding areas.
