WHAT FIELDS OF STUDY DOES THE CANON COLLINS RMTF SCHOLARSHIP COVER?
Canon Collins Trust, partnered with the Ros Moger and Terry Furlong (RMTF) group, are inviting students to apply for scholarship funding, for the 2027 academic year.
Scholarships will be awarded to students from South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Swaziland, Zambia, for Postgraduate studies (Masters or PhD) in South Africa, within the following fields:
- Justice (including Climate Justice, Law, Economics and Politics)
- Education policy and practice
- Humanities (including Literature, History, Anthropology and the Arts)
The scholarship aims to support exceptional individuals who are committed to social justice in southern Africa and for whom a postgraduate qualification is an essential tool in working to create an open and just society.
WHAT EXPENSES DOES THE CANON COLLINS RMTF SCHOLARSHIP COVER?
The Scholarship will be awarded to the value of between R20 000 and R100 000, depending on the students circumstances.
Masters students will receive funding for up to 2 years and PhD students will receive funding for up to 3 years. Funding will be renewed based on satisfactory academic performance.
Scholarship recipients will be required to take part in annual conferences and various smaller events throughout the year.
WHAT IS THE SELECTION PROCESS FOR THE CANON COLLINS RMTF SCHOLARSHIP?
Applicants will be notified of the outcome of their application – this correspondence will be sent via email
Shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend an interview between October and November 2026, and thereafter, all applicants will be informed of the outcome of their application in mid-December 2026. Please do NOT email to follow up on the outcome of your application.
WHAT ARE THE ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR THE CANON COLLINS RMTF SCHOLARSHIP?
Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):
- You must be a national of, or have refugee status in, one of the following countries: South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Eswatini (Swaziland), Malawi or Zambia
- You must be a resident in one of the above countries
- You must be studying or applying to study within one the areas listed above, at postgraduate level (Masters or PhD)
- You must be studying or intend on studying on a full-time or part-time basis (applications will also be considered for students who wish to study by distance learning)
- You must be studying or applying to study at a university in South Africa
- Masters degree applicants: you must be in possession of a good Honours degree (minimum Second Class Upper Division or equivalent) or about to graduate in 2026
- PhD degree applicants: you must be in possession of a good Master’s degree or about to graduate in 2026
- PhD degree applicants: you must have identified a supervisor (or prospective supervisor) who has agreed in principle to supervise the proposed research, and submit a draft research proposal as part of the application
- You must demonstrate a sustained commitment to social justice through a minimum of 2 years of active engagement in activities that contributed to addressing social, educational, economic, environmental, cultural, or human rights challenges in their community, country, or region
- You must be pursuing studies or research that contribute to understanding, responding to, or addressing a significant social justice challenge affecting Southern Africa

Submit clear copies of the following supporting documentation along with your online application (the submission of these documents is compulsory – if any items are missing, your application be disregarded)
- ID document, Birth Certificate, Passport or Driver’s License (certified copy)
- Proof of refugee status, if applicable
- Degree certificates, if available (certified copy)
- Academic transcripts (certified copy)
- Curriculum Vitae
- 2 latest payslips, if employed
Shortlisted candidates will also be contacted via email and required to submit the following supporting documents in September 2026:
- PhD applicants: draft PhD research proposal
- PhD applicants: a letter of support from the supervisor (or prospective supervisor) who has agreed in principle to supervise the proposed research
- Masters applicants: sample piece of writing

The Canon Collins Trust has been investing in higher education across southern Africa since 1981, helping talented students access opportunities that enable them to become leaders and create positive change in their communities. Since its establishment, the Trust has supported more than 4,000 scholars from 14 southern African countries, building an extensive network of graduates working in fields such as education, law, public policy, science and social justice.
